Connected by Hope started in 2009 as a simple newsletter put out to friends and family after the death of our mother due to her long battle with Lung Cancer. My sisters and I wanted to find a way to celebrate her life and hopeful give insight and hope to others fighting the disease. During my mom’s short stint with Cancer we notice how little information we were given by her ocologist on how to cope mentally and physically with the disease. I became frustrated and started to do some research, I learned that everyone has cancerous cells in their bodies and in my opinion if we make certain lifestyle changes we may be able to prevent ourselves from developing the actually disease. The tips we placed in the newsletter were not giving to us or authorized by any physician or member of the medical field they simple were tips we found on various sites on the internet.
During my moms short stint with the disease we got to see first hand the toll it took on her mentally and physically. My mom was always a champion of life. She was normally the most positive well spirited woman but the disease would show us a different side of her. She found it hard to think positive. My mom was internet savvy and due to her research of the life expectancy of someone in her condition she had a very hard time keeping her head up. We looked for a support network for her but due to her condition she rarely wanted to leave the home. So we decided in our publication to offer not only dietary changes but lifestyle changes as well. We included activities such as staying away from toxic foods, prayer/meditation, spending time with love one, etc. All off these activities can help to boost your spirit and help you continue the fight.
In the 2010 and 2011 issues we decided to extend our circle a bit and give them out at work and various other places. At this time we also started to sell awareness lollipops and cupcakes with the proceeds benefiting StanduptoCancer.org. In 2011 enlisted the help of my friends Shana Gipson, Chowan Aforo, and Veronica Brown to help me further the cause. Ironically they all have had family members who were affected by the disease. Today we are using Facebook and our blog to bring awareness to not just the affects of Cancer but to show people how to Live a Life full of Passion.
